Excited -- but down to business.
That's the only way Roadrunner Women's Soccer Coach Tom Eichhorn can describe his team's approach to Saturday's Region 19 District A championship match vs. Bergen Community College.
The title match will kick off at 1:30 pm at Ocean County College -- and Eichhorn said his team will be ready to battle.
In recent weeks, the Runners blanked the Bulldogs, 8-0. But that results is in the past and has no bearing on Saturday's title match.
"We're excited -- We have the chance to win a championship and move on to Nationals," said Eichhorn, a first-year coach. "And each player understands this won't be given to us but needs to be earned. They are working hard -- it's all business."
The Runners have risen to the No. 3 spot in the NJCAA Division III National Rankings with a 10-3-2 record against a tough regional schedule. The winner of the District A Final will earn an automatic berth to the upcoming NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
And many players have contributed thanks to a roster loaded with talent, versatility and determination.
Several players, freshmen and sophomores alike, have sparked the team's success.
Returnee Ava Pino, a Delsea graduate, has performed well at midfield. Freshman Brianna Morgan has anchored the back line while teammates Brianna Howard and Ava Delaney have provided a solid attack with freshman Ryann Foote adding solid scoring power off the bench.
"We work well as a team and we're ready to go all the way in the Region tournament," said Ava Delaney recently. "We played a tough schedule during the regular season, and we developed a great team chemistry."
Others have contributed as well, including Angelina Rodriguez, Allie Blankenship, Emily Belsanti and Jordyn White among others.
