Women's Basketball -- Roadrunners Drop Heartbreaker to Visiting Bergen
After falling behind by as many as 12 points in the second period, the Roadrunners women's basketball team appeared to have victory well in sight against visiting Bergen County Community College on Saturday.
The Roadrunners held a 46-42 advantage with 3:31 remaining but could not maintain the lead as the visitors outscored RCGC by a 10-2 count in the final moments. Forced to foul, the Runners (4-3, 3-2) were scorched by Bergen guard Liana Martinez, who sank nine fourth quarter foul shots, including 8 of 9 in the final moments, to seal the outcome in the key GSAC/Region XIX matchup.
"We could not get it done offensively, especially down the stretch, and our defense was off the mark," said head coach Rich Cooper. "Give a lot of credit to Bergen for playing a tough game on our home court."
RCGC fell behind 26-14 in the second period but climbed to within 30-25 by halftime. They claimed the lead at 31-30 at the start of the third quarter thanks to a 6-0 early surge.
Guard Kylar Coughlin (Gloucester) led the Runners' offense with 11 points while forward Kadina Harris-Hood (Atlantic City) and forward Yazmin Trueblood (Woodrow Wilson) added 9 and 8 respectively.
