It proved to be quite a season for the RCSJ Women's Tennis Team. The Runners proved this emphatically this past week with their solid performance in the NJCAA Division III Tennis Championships in Chattanooga, TN, which concluded Sunday afternoon.
For starters, the Runners finished in second place overall with 17 points behind champion Oxford Emory, which won the title with 26 points. Camden County College finished with 13 points.
In Mary Jewett's second season as head coach, the Runners brought home a slew of hardware aside from the overall national team trophy. Several players earned All-American honors, including:
Jenna Georgette, No. 2 Singles
Angel Randhawa, No. 4 Singles
Allison Barker, No. 6 Singles
Emily Hamilton and Jenna Georgette, No. 1 Doubles
In addition, Georgette was recognized with the Spirit of Competition Award, as voted on by participating coaches in the tournament.
"It was an amazing six days to say the least," said Jewett. "The girls performed so well and really deserved the success they achieved on the national level."
While the entire team performed at a high level, Georgette really stood out, according to Jewett. Georgette was recruited to play for the team at the outset of the season, but came aboard with no playing experience. She worked hard throughout the season to improve her skills, and capped off her campaign with outstanding efforts in the Region 19 and National Championship tournaments.
"Jenna played like a veteran in the postseason, and we're quite proud of her," said Coach Jewett. "She ran down every ball. she slipped and fell down, but kept getting back up to finish the job."
Jewett also credited Assistant Coach Nick Raddi with his efforts in coaching the players, who also won a Region 19 championship the previous week. "Nick has been passionate about helping the players improve and about our overall success," said Jewett. "Nick has been there every step of the way."
